Only Fools Fall in Love

Only fools fall in love,” father said. “If you ever find yourself doing such a thing, remember, you’ve failed to learn the greatest lesson this world teaches. Everything here is transactional. Every relationship is an invisible ledger of profit and loss. Nothing is unconditional. Hold your grip tighter. Stay focused.”

“But what if I am a fool, father?” She asked. “I would not mind being one. Fools have always been mocked by the world. Yet the world has never stopped needing them.”

“You don’t understand,” he sighed. “This world is not built for tender hearts. You must fight, demand, calculate. You must learn to be selfish. Look the world in the eye and ask for what you deserve.”

“I am willing to fight,” She replied. “But I do not wish to become selfish. And perhaps the universe, in its strange arithmetic, gives every fool exactly what they deserve.”

The world will break you.”

“Perhaps. But the world also breaks those who never love. The only difference is that they call their loneliness maturity.”

Father looked away.

“Maybe fools do fall in love,” She said, smiling faintly. “But perhaps it is the wise who spend their entire lives bargaining with existence, turning every relationship into a contract, every kindness into an investment, every person into an opportunity and then wonder why their victories feel so unbearably empty.”

After all, father, love is not for the faint-hearted.

Cowardice is.
